Commmunity Colleges are the Foundation for Success

This was what  Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said when she delivered  the commencement address at Hostos Community College yesterday.

In addition to her collegiate duties, she also had a Bronx Housing Project, Bronxdale Houses renamed after her and attended a ceremony at her high school.

As a former New York  City Project Kid myself, I can appreciate how this step can help  to inspire not only current residents of Bronxdale, but also children all over  the city to aspire and dream big.

Where did your commencement ceremonies take place?

Some schools are still wrapping up or recovering from commencement. Recently, I attended a graduation ceremony in a convention center. It got me thinking back about where my collegiate ceremonies took place.

My commencement ceremonies tool place on a football field and in churches (yes, plural).

So tell me, did your commencement ceremonies take place in an unique or unusual place or setting? Let me know in the comments.

Commencement, Graduation or both?

Even though I have been a professional in Higher Education for some time now, it is always good to step out of my routine and see how other institutions do things.

On a trip last summer, I has honored to see one of my good friends receive their degree. The ceremony on that campus was referred to as commencement.

However, among students and other colleges, it is more commonly know as graduation.

There is a clear and distinct difference between the two as one university has pointed out.

Some explanations have been that it is based on tradition while others say that it better to use the more common term to bring the point across.

So, how does your institution convey commencement and/or graduation ceremonies?
