Autumn on a college campus typically means students, faculty and staff finally getting back in gear from summer recess. In recent years, getting back into the swing of things has taken on a new meaning.
Now more than ever, colleges and universities have been under strain especially from current events. When stories come out in terms of safety and security, people cannot help but be put on edge at the place where safety is often taken for granted.
Its always during a time of crisis that the college community comes together. Now is also the time for compassion and courage. The college community is the family that is far away from home or across town.
This past week, we all became part of the college community.

Now that schools are back into gear, safety and security are always in the back of everyone’s mind.

Before we talked about what paths people take to the college classroom. Now we add another to the list of celebrity turned professor.
Disclosure: I am a Yankees fan.
Unless you haven’t been paying attention, we have been focusing on where the iPad is allowed on campus over the past few weeks.
However, there are some places where the iPad isn’t allowed like some colleges and universities and Yankee Stadium (why you anyone want to carry it to the game is beyond me).
While the iPad is still exploring its boundaries, we can all be reassured that this is only the beginning.
Never mind the required reading list as in textbooks, try the required hardware list.
Unplugged reports that some students are required, (with a capital R) to buy either an iPod or an iPhone.
Of course to be fair to non-Apple users, it would be nice to have audio and video in formats outside of iTunes for those who have other devices.
I am proud to announce that the Metropolitan College of New York’s MCNY Admissions Blog had its first student blog post. The blog is nearly 2 months old, but it has already gotten some great responses. I hope more students will become motivated to blog about their experiences with the college.
One of the other key points in the eduWeb2008 conference is that despite learning about all these great insights and tips learned in the conference, in the end its the college that had to be true to itself.
In a market like New York City, its a challenge everyday to stand out. Since I travel the subway almost everyday, some days it seems like the ads all look the same.
This is why its important more than ever in this market that colleges distinguish themselves among the competition.
